The authors study the index of maximum density (least power having maximum number of ones among the sequence of powers) for irreducible primitives (they observe this is the least power which is the matrix of an equivalence relation). They find the maximum for matrices of fixed size and period, study gaps in its values, and compute its values in the symmetric case.
