Theoretical approaches to turbulence (Q1115688)

[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This is a collection of 19 papers presented at the workshop sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering and NASA Langley Research Center in 1984. All the participants in this workshop are in a way experts in their own branch of turbulence and hence the presentation of each lecture is an autoritative one. Chapter II gives a history of turbulence which is based on 79 reference papers, some of these dating back to 1880, 1925 etc. It is really an interesting survey and every research worker who intends to start doing research in the area of turbulence should study this 2nd chapter. Then one can choose a chapter of one's own choice and start studying it and then one can try to do some research in that particular topic. However, there is one note of caution, which I wish to add here: In the references of Chapter I, Prof. H. W. Liepmann's paper is referred viz., ``The rise and fall of ideas in turbulence'', American Scientist 67, 221- 228 (1979). Prof. Liepmann is also a well-known authority in the field of fluid mechanics. So in view of this paper, after about 50 years, how many of these different approaches will stand the test of modern technology, one could imagine and then start doing research in one of the fields of turbulence. In general, the presentation of the subject matter is good.
