Let \(\Lambda\) be an artin algebra. For \(\Lambda\)-modules \((=\) finitely generated \(\Lambda\)-left modules) A and X the trace \(\tau_ A(X)\) of A in X is the submodule of X generated by images of morphisms from A to X. C is called a trace quotient module by A if there exists a nonsplit short exact sequence of \(\Lambda\)-modules \(0\to Y\to^{f}X\to C\to 0\) such that \(\tau_ A(X)=f(Y).\) In the paper properties of trace quotient modules are studied where ``the main impetus for studying trace quotient modules is that whether or not a module is a trace quotient module has very interesting homological consequences''. As application to representation theory it is shown that, if each nonprojective preprojective \(\Lambda\)-module is a trace quotient module, then: (i) every indecomposable \(\Lambda\)-module has a simple top; in particular \(\Lambda\) is of finite representation type. Assuming (i) necessary and sufficient conditions on \(\Lambda\) are given, so that every indecomposable \(\Lambda\)-module is a trace quotient module.
