This is an announcement of some results that extend and generalize earlier work of the author [Teor. Veroyatn. Primen. 18, 186-193 (1973; Zbl 0324.60008); English translation in Theory Probab. Appl. 18, 180-186 (1973)]. Let A be a symmetric unital Banach algebra, \(A^{\wedge}\) its *-representation space, and B the \(C^*\)-completion of A. For each subset F of \(B^{\wedge}\), a collection of factor-algebras of A, called tail algebras, is constructed. If G is a locally compact group, if A is the algebra \(L^ 1(G)\) with an adjoined identity and if F consists solely of the trivial representation, the corresponding tail algebras are called tail algebras of the group G. Theorem 1 asserts that if H is a commutative normal subgroup of G and the natural image of G in Aut(H) is compact, then one of the tail algebras is isometrically isomorphic to \(L^ 1(G/H).\) Consider a random walk on a locally compact group G, and assume that \(L^ 1(G)\) is symmetric. Theorem 3 states that the tail \(\sigma\)-algebra of the random walk is trivial if and only if one, and hence all, of the tail algebras of the group G satisfy a certain technical condition.
