    We study weighted norm inequalities for a general maximal operator of Hardy-Littlewood type. Let U, V, be two arbitrary set and let \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) be two positive Borel measures on \(R^ n\times U\) and \(R^ n\times V\) respectively. We use set functions, say \(\Phi\) (or \(\Psi)\), form cubes in \(R^ n\) into Borel sets in \(R^ n\times U\) (or \(R^ n\times V)\) satisfying: (I) If \(Q_ 1\), \(Q_ 2\) are disjoint cubes then \(\Phi (Q_ 1)\cap \Phi (Q_ 2)=\emptyset.\) (II) If \(Q_ 1\subset Q_ 2\) then \(\Phi (Q_ 1)\subset \Phi (Q_ 2).\) (III) If Q(x,r) denotes the cube with center x and side length r, then, for any \(x\in R^ n\), \(\cup_{r>0}\Phi (Q(x,r))=R^ n\times U.\) Our maximal operator which applies functions in \(R^ n\times U\) into functions in \(R^ n\times V\), is the following: \[ Tf(x,v)=\sup \{\frac{1}{| Q|}\int_{\Phi (Q)}| f(y,u)| d\alpha (y,u):\quad (x,v)\in \Psi (Q)\}, \] i.e., the supremum is taken over all cubes such that (x,v)\(\in \Psi (Q)\). We obtain that T is bounded from \(L^ p(R^ n\times U,w d\alpha)\) into \(weak\)-L\({}^ p(R^ n\times V,d\beta)\), \((1<p<\infty)\) if and only if the weight w satisfies that for any cube Q, \[ \frac{\beta (\Psi (Q))}{| Q|}\{\frac{1}{| Q|}\int_{\Phi (Q)}w(x,u)^{1-p'} d\alpha (x,u)\}^{p-1}\leq C. \] Strong type inequalities, vector-valued inequalities and related operators of Calderón-Zygmund type are also considered.
