Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field, \(P\) a simply connected, chain finite ray-category, and \(A=k(P)\) the associated \(k\)-category [cf. \textit{R. Bautista}, \textit{P. Gabriel}, \textit{A. V. Rojter} and \textit{L. Salmeroń}, Invent. Math. 81, 217-285 (1985; Zbl 0575.16012)]. By \(A\)-mod we denote the category of all finite dimensional \(A\)-modules, i.e. all \(k\)-linear functors \(M\) from \(A\) to the category of \(k\)-vector spaces with the property \(\sum_{x\in P}M(x)<\infty\). An indecomposable \(A\)-module \(V\) in \(A\)-mod is called thin start module for a given point \(s\in P\) if \(\dim V(t)\leq 1\) for all \(t\in P\), \(V(s)\neq 0\), and \(\tau V(s)=0\), where \(\tau\) denotes the Auslander-Reiten translate in \(A\)-mod. The set \(SM(P,s)\) of all isomorphism classes of thin start modules \(V\) for \(s\) which are not isomorphic to the indecomposable projective \(A\)-module \(P_ s\) belonging to \(s\) can be partially ordered by defining \(V_ 1\geq V_ 2\) if there is a homomorphism \(\phi\in\Hom_ A(V_ 1,V_ 2)\) with \(\Hom(P_ s,\phi)\neq 0\). We prove that \(A\) is locally representation finite iff for each \(s\in P\) the finite poset \((SM(P,s),\geq)\) is representation finite. Moreover, we show that if \(A\) is locally representation finite and \(M\) is an indecomposable not projective module in \(A\)-mod then there is a point \(s\in P\) with \(\dim M(s)\geq \dim M(t)\) for all \(t\in P\) such that there exists an exact sequence \(P^ n_ s\to W\to M\to 0\) with the property that all indecomposable summands of \(W\) are thin start modules for \(s\). The last result is achieved by using a computer list of all representation finite sincere \(P\) with at most 13 points.
