Some problems of the computation of the Hausdorff dimension lead to the necessity of the definition of the topological pressure, in particular, topological entropy of a homomorphism f, acting on a bounded noncompact set. This definition is based on a modification of Carathéodory's general construction and can be given in various manners. The question whether the introduced quantities coincide remains open. We consider four different ways of introducing the topological pressure. It is shown that in the case of a compactum they coincide, while in other cases they are different. In particular, in the noncompact case the topological entropies of f and \(f^{-1}\) may be different. For a more general case we prove Furstenberg's formula, connecting the topological entropy and the Hausdorff dimension.
