In queueing theory statistical methods are necessary to identify system parameters (mainly specifications of the arrival and service-time processes) in order to establish models for analytic treatment. The present paper is a systematic overview of some of the pertinent literature that appeared in the last 25 years. Special emphasis is on methods based on data that are easy to collect and therefore most interesting to the practitioner. Particular issues are: Markovian systems with certain phase-type distributions, application of the method of moments, and the use of sequential probability ratio tests. An outlook on future work to be tackled is also proposed.
