The problem of large elastic compression and torsion of a circular cylindrical rubber pad with metal plates bonded to its upper and lower surfaces is examined. The rubber is assumed to be modelled by the isotropic incompressible perfectly elastic Mooney material. For the general Mooney strain-energy function the governing equations of finite elasticity are integrated to yield a first order highly nonlinear ordinary differential equation which must be integrated numerically. However a further integration can be effected for the special case of the neo-Hookean material and the deformation of combined compression and torsion can be given explicitly. Numerical results for the neo-Hookean material and some experimental results for pure compression are briefly reported. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical force-deflection relation due to \textit{W. W. Klingbeil} and \textit{R. T. Shield} [Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 17, 281 ff. (1966)] and the shape factor approximation.
