The L-characteristic L(A) of a (linear or nonlinear) operator A is the set of all pairs of nonnegative numbers (1/p,1/q) such that A maps the Lebesgue space \(L_ p\) in the Lebesgue space \(L_ q\). This paper provides a precise description of the L-characteristics for nonlinear superposition operators \(Fx(s)=f(s,x(s))\) between two Lebesgue spaces over arbitrary domains. This allows the obtention of an explicit description of invariant Lebesgue spaces for solving Hammerstein nonlinear integral equations. The case of the L-characteristic of F between Lorentz and Marcinkiewicz spaces is also considered, a situation used in interpolation theory.
