In the paper the thermostatics of materials with memory whose stress and free energy depend on the higher gradients of deformation is analyzed. At first, the authors derive the restrictions which the isothermal version of the Clausius-Duhem inequality imposes on the constitutive functionals. Then they consider equilibrium states of the global body and introduce a concept of stability via an appropriate version of the energy criterion. In conclusion, they obtain the equilibrium stress relation at points of stability, the Eshelby conservation law, and discuss various quasiconvexity properties of the free energy. These results suffice to extend the main conclusions of the second author [ibid. 9, 177-186 and 187-199 (1984; Zbl 0562.73004; Zbl 0562.73005); and Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 88, 135-161 (1985; Zbl 0624.73007)] on stable phase transitions to the materials considered.
