Viscoplastic media form a vast class of substances which do not manifest a noticeable shear viscoelasticity. These are pastes, paints, lubricants, drilling solutions and also a number of food and chemical substances. Though the rheological behavior of the media is relatively simple (as compared with viscoelastic ones), the traditional approaches for describing them result in some complicated boundary value problems for nonlinear partial differential equations which are very difficult to solve even with large modern computers. Therefore various approximate methods for solving these problems (and among them variational approaches) are of great value.
