Chebyshev is regarded as the creator of the famous Russian (or Petersburg) school of probability. Here a curriculum vitae and an appreciation of his work (especially that on approximation and on integration in finite terms) are given and an account of his many contacts with Western European scientists. A study of the Nachlass of E. F. Catalan (1814-1894) and of new documents found in Liège raised the question of whether Chebyshev was already in Paris in 1842 or ten years later as officially has been reported. 53 references.
