A wrinkled function, from a measurable set \(S\) into the reals, is a function \(f\), such that for every measurable subset \(A\subset S\) of positive measure, \(f\) is monotone on some subset \(B\subset A\) with \(| B| =0\) and \(| f(b)| >0.\) The author constructs a wrinkled function, starting from the perfect, nowhere dense set \[ P=\{x\mid x\in [0,1];\;x=\sum c_ ia_ i,\;c_ i\in \{0,1\},\;a_ i=1/2^{i+1}+3/4^{i+1}\}. \] After proving that \(F_ 1(x)=\sum^{\infty}_{i=1}c_{2i}(x).2^ i\) and \(F_ 2(x)=\sum^{\infty}_{i=1}c_{2i-1}(x)/2^ i\), continuous on \([0,1],\) are wrinkled functions on \(P\), he proves that \(H=\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}1/2^ n.g_ n\) is a wrinkled function on \([0,1],\) where the \(g_ n\)'s are wrinkled functions on certain appropriately chosen sets \(P_ n.\) His fundamental idea is based on a lemma which states that \(f+g\) is wrinkled on a positive measurable subset of a given set \(I\), if \(f\) is continuous and \(g\) differentiable on \(I\).
