    Let \(f(x):=x/(e^ x-1)\) for \(x\neq 0\), \(f(0)=1\). If \(B_ 1,B_ 2,..\). are Bernoulli numbers, then \[ f(x)=1-x/2-\sum^{\infty}_{k=1}(-1)^ kB_ kx^{2k}/(2k)!,\quad | x| <2\pi. \] More precisely \(B_ 1=1/6\), \(B_ 2=1/30\), \(B_ 3=1/42\), \(B_ 4=1/30\), \(B_ 5=5/66,..\).. The function defined by the series \(S(t)=\sum^{\infty}_{k=1}2k(k^ 2+t^ 2)^{-2}\) has been the subject of a number of estimates, starting with an 1890 conjecture by Mathieu that \(0<S(t)<t^{-2}.\) The present author proves the following interesting result: ``For \(t\in R\), \(t\neq 0\), \(r=1,2,...\), one has \[ S(t)=t^{-2}-B_ 1t^{-4}-B_ 2t^{-6}-...-B_ rt^{-2r-2}+R_ r(t), \] where \(R_ r(t)\) may be expressed in either of the forms \[ R_ r(t)=(-1)^ rt^{-2r-2}\int^{\infty}_{0}f^{(2r+1)}(x)\cos tx dx=(- 1\quad)^{r+1}t^{-2r-3}\int^{\infty}_{0}f^{(2r+2)}(x)\sin tx dx, \] and \[ | R_ r(t)| <t^{-2r- 2}\frac{\pi}{2}\binom{r+1/2}{r}B_ r\quad (r\geq 1).'' \]
