Let G be the group of germs of holomorphic diffeomorphisms of \({\mathbb{C}}\) in a neighbourhood of the origin, and let \({\mathfrak g}\) be its Lie algebra. The authors study properties of G and its representations. There is a formal exponential map exp: \({\mathfrak g}\to G\), but this is neither locally injective nor surjective, as is usual for groups of diffeomorphisms. However, it is shown that every element of G is a product \(\exp (u_ 1)\exp (u_ 2)\), for some \(v_ 1,v_ 2\in {\mathfrak g}\). The Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) is a subalgebra of the Virasoro algebra Vir, and one can restrict the highest weight representations of Vir to \({\mathfrak g}\). It is shown that these lift to an action of the universal covering group of G (by unbounded operators).
