The author continues his study of range transformations. Suppose that S and T are sets of real or complex valued functions on a set Y and D is a subset of the complex plane. Then \(Op(S_ D,T)\) denotes the set of range transformations, i.e., the set of all complex valued functions h defined on D such that the composition \(h\circ f\) belongs to T, whenever f belongs to S and has range in D. The main result of this paper concerns the case Y is a locally compact Hausdorff space; S is an ideal I of a uniformly closed subalgebra A of \(C_ 0(Y)\); T is Re A; and D is a plane domain containing the origin. The author shows that if the set \(Op(I_ D,Re A)\) contains a function which is not harmonic near the origin, then the uniform closure of I is selfadjoint. The proof depends on a local version of Bernard's lemma, proven by the author in this paper. [For part I see Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 297, 629-643 (1986; Zbl 0652.46043).]
