Poincaré-Sobolev and related inequalities are proved for immersed submanifolds, and more generally for rectifiable varifolds, in \({\mathbb{R}}^ N\). Suppose that \(M\subset B_ r(0)\subset {\mathbb{R}}^ N\), where M is an immersed n-dimensional submanifold. Let h: \(M\to {\mathbb{R}}\) be a Lipschitz function. A Poincaré-Sobolev inequality is proved for non-negative h in case \({\mathcal H}^ n\{\xi \in M: h(\xi)>0\}<\omega_ nr^ n\) and \(h\in W^{1,p}({\mathcal H}^ n\lfloor M)\) for some \(p<n\). This generalizes a Poincaré type result of Leon Simon, but in addition the relevant constant here does not depend on \({\mathcal H}^ n(M)\). In case \(p=n\) an Orlicz space result is proved. The proofs use a covering argument to obtain weak \(L^ p\) type estimates on \({\mathcal H}^ n\{\xi \in M: h(\xi)>s\}\) for each \(s>0.\) Appropriate generalizations in case there is no restriction on \({\mathcal H}^ n\{\xi \in M: h(\xi)>0\}\) are also obtained. In this case the result for \(p=n\) is analogous to the conclusion of the John-Nirenberg theorem for functions of bounded mean oscillation.
