For the numerical solution of the singular integral equation \[ 1/\pi \int^{\infty}_{-\infty}g(t)/(t-x)dt+\int^{\infty}_{- \infty}K(x,t)g(t)dt=f(x) \] a variational technique is proposed. For the approximation of functions in this equation the `hat' functions and an orthogonalization process are used. Convergence and the rate of convergence are established.
