The average system frequency concept is combined with a class of multiple time scale algorithms to simulate the slow post-transient electromechanical dynamics. It is shown that, using different time steps more suited to the different dynamic phenomena, a significant reduction in CPU time can be obtained without any adverse effects on the simulation results. It is also shown that the modified trapezoidal rule performs better than the fourth order Runge-Kutta integration routine when used with the multiple time scale algorithms. Numerical study of a 5-bus power system is included to demonstrate the improvement in the solution time, stability, and accuracy of the new approach over previous methods.
