The author discusses the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture \(\pi (x+y)\leq \pi (x)+\pi (y)\) \((\pi (x)=\#\{p\leq x\), p prime\(\}\) ; x,y\(\geq 1)\). By using the prime number theorem - without or with the Riemann hypothesis - he gets upper and lower inequalities for \(\pi (x+y)\). A typical example is \[ \pi (x+y)-\pi (x)-\ell n(y) (\ell n(x+y))^{-1} \pi (y)=O(y(\ell n y)^{-n-1}) \] for \(0<d\leq 1\); x,y sufficiently large; \(x\geq y\geq dx\geq 2\); \(n\geq 2\). All arguments are elementary.
