Let \({\mathcal M}(n,d)\) be the quotient variety of stable hypersurfaces of degree \( d\) in \({\mathbb{P}}_ n({\mathbb{C}})\) for the natural action of \(Sl(n+1,{\mathbb{C}})\), and \(\bar {\mathcal M}(n,d)\) be the projective quotient variety of all hypersurfaces of degree \( d.\)- The aim of this paper is: (1) To evaluate the Betti numbers (resp. the intersection Betti numbers) of \({\mathcal M}(n,d)\) (resp. \(\bar {\mathcal M}(n,d))\) for fixed n, and \(d\to +\infty\). More precisely: for any d and: \(i<2h(n,d)\sim (2/e)\dim_{{\mathbb{C}}}({\mathcal M}(n,d)),\) one has: \[ H_ i({\mathcal M},{\mathbb{Q}})\simeq IH_ i(\bar {\mathcal M},{\mathbb{Q}})\simeq H_ i(BGl(n+1,{\mathbb{C}}),{\mathbb{Q}}), \] where \({\mathcal M}:={\mathcal M}(n,d)\) and \(\bar {\mathcal M}:=\bar {\mathcal M}(n,d)\). One thus gets about (1/e) of \(H_*({\mathcal M},{\mathbb{Q}})\), and by Poincaré duality, about (2/e) of \(IH_*(\bar {\mathcal M},{\mathbb{Q}});\) (2) To compute all intersection Betti numbers of \(\bar {\mathcal M}(n,d)\) for: \(n=1,\quad all\quad d;\quad n=2,\quad d\leq \sigma;\quad n=3,\quad d\leq 4.\) The odd ones vanish, and for example, the intersection Poincaré polynomial \(IP_ t(\bar {\mathcal M}(3,4))\) is: \(Q(t)+t^{38}\cdot Q(1/t)\) \(if\) Q(t)\(=1+t^ 2+2t^ 4+3t^ 6+5t^ 8+6t^{10}+9t^{12}+10t^{14}+12t^{16}+15t^{18}.\) This computation is made, according to previous work of the author, by a detailed analysis of the singularities of \(\bar {\mathcal M}(n,d)\), and computation of the ordinary Betti numbers of a partial desingularization \(\tilde {\mathcal M}(n,d)\) with only finite quotient singularities, obtained from \(\bar {\mathcal M}(n,d)\) by an explicit sequence of blow-ups. When \(n=3\), \(d=4\), this construction rests on Sl(4,\({\mathbb{C}})\)-normal forms for degenerate quartics obtained by \textit{J. Shah} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 263, 271-303 (1981; Zbl 0456.14019)].
