The positive linear operators introduced by \textit{G. Bleimann}, \textit{P. L. Butzer} and \textit{L. Hahn} [Indag. Math. 42, 255--262 (1980; Zbl 0437.41021)] are given as \[ L_ n(f,x)=(1+x)^{- n}\sum^{n}_{k=0}f(k/(n-k+1))\left(\begin{matrix} n\\ k\end{matrix} \right)x^ k \] for \(n\in {\mathbb N}\) and \(f\in C[0,\infty)\). In this paper probabilistic methods are used to establish results for the rate of convergence of these operators, namely, Theorem 1: For any bounded continuous function \(f\) on \([0,\infty)\) and \(\geq 1\), it holds that \[ | L_ n(f,x)-f(x)| \leq 3\omega (f,\sqrt{x(1+x)^ 2/n}, \] and Theorem 2: For any bounded and uniformly continuous function \(f\) on \([0,\infty)\) and \(n\geq 1\), it holds that \[ | L_ n(f,x)-f(x)| \leq 2C(\omega (f,\sqrt{x(1+x)^ 2/n})+x(1+x)^ 2\| f\| /n), \] where \(C\) is a constant. Theorem 2 is an improved version of a result of Bleimann, Butzer and Hahn, as the condition \(n\geq N(x)=24(1+x)\) could be dropped. As a further result, it is shown that the Szász-Mirakyan operators are in a certain sense limits of the operators \(L_ n\).
