Let M be a finite-dimensional subspace of a normed linear space X, and let P be the metric projection onto M, i.e. the mapping which assigns to each \(x\in X\) the set \(P(x)=\{y\in M:\| x-y\| =d(x,M)\},\) where \(d(x,M)=\inf \{\| x-y\|:y\in M\}\). According to \textit{F. Deutsch} and \textit{P. Kenderov} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 14, 185-194 (1983; Zbl 0518.41031)] the mapping P is said to be almost lower semicontinuous if for every \(x\in X\) and every \(\epsilon >0\) there is a neighbourhood V of x such that \[ \cap_{y\in V}\{z\in M:d(z,P(y))<\epsilon \}\neq \emptyset. \] Improving results concerning the existence of continuous selections obtained by Deutsch and Kenderov in the above-mentioned paper the author shows that P is almost lower semicontinuous if and only if it has a continuous selection.
