A generalized Hopf manifold is a locally conformal Kähler manifold whose Lee form is parallel but not exact. The main non-Kähler example is \(S^ 1\times S^{2k+1}\), \(k\geq 1\). A family M(r,1) of compact generalized Hopf nilmanifolds of dimension \(2r+2,\) \(r\geq 1\), has been constructed by \textit{L. A. Cordero}, \textit{M. Fernández} and \textit{M. de León} [ibid. 21, 187-192 (1986; Zbl 0601.53035)]. In this paper, the authors construct a family of four dimensional compact generalized Hopf solvmanifolds \(N^ 4(k,n)\), where n is a non-negative integer. The manifold \(N^ 4(k,n)\) is a non-trivial circle bundle over a compact three dimensional solvmanifold considered by \textit{L. Auslander}, \textit{L. Green} and \textit{F. Hahn} [Flows on homogeneous spaces, Ann. Math. Stud. 53 (Princeton Univ. Press 1963; Zbl 0106.368)]. The authors prove the following results: (1) The Betti numbers of \(N^ 4(k,n)\) are \(b_ 0=b_ 1=b_ 3=1\), \(b_ 2=0\). Hence \(N^ 4(k,n)\) can have no symplectic structures and hence \(N^ 4(k,n)\) can have no Kähler structures. (2) The minimal model of \(N^ 4(k,n)\) is formal. Let us remark that the minimal model of M(r,1) is not formal. (3) A structure of generalized Hopf manifold on \(N^ 4(k,n)\) is constructed. Moreover, \(N^ 4(k,n)\) is a complex surface in the Kodaira class \(VII_ 0\).
