Let \(X=\lim_{\leftarrow}(X_ n,p_ n\) \(_{n+1})\) be an inverse limit continuum with bonding maps \(p_ n\) \(_{n+1}:\) \(X_{n+1}\to X_ n\). W. T. Ingram has shown that the span of X, \(\sigma\) (X), is zero if and only if there is a cofinal subsequence \((n_ i)\) such that \(\lim_ j\sigma (p_{n_ i},p_{n_ j})=0\) for each i. The author proves a mapping version of this theorem. Further, by a result of H. Cook, the symmetric span of the dyadic solenoid is zero while its span is positive. The author generalizes this to the polyadic solenoid.
