A commutative domain A is Mori if it has the ascending chain condition on integral divisorial ideals. It is proved (rather easily) that a domain A is Mori if and only if every factor of A by a non-zero principal ideal satisfies the ascending chain condition on annihilators (theorem 2.2). Using this characterisation various interesting results on Mori domains are derived. For example, if A is a Mori domain such that A/P is uncountable for every maximal divisorial ideal P of A, then the polynomial ring over A in any collection of indeterminates is again Mori (theorem 3.15). The question whether this is true for all Mori domains A appears to be still open; but the author promises a counterexample to the corresponding question for power series extensions in a sequel to the present paper.
