The author discusses the following problem. Let T be a nonlinear disjointly additive operator which maps simple functions into an F-space H. Find a maximal F-space E such that T acts from E into H and is continuous. Typical examples of such operators are nonlinear superposition operators [see the book by \textit{P. P. Zabrejko} and the reviewer, Cambridge University Press (1989)]. A basic tool for solving this problem is the theory of modular function spaces [see the author's book ``Modular function spaces'', New York (1988; Zbl 0661.46023)].
