The aim of the paper is to determine all pairs (d,T) for which the functions \(f(z):=(z+1)\exp (zT)+d\) and \(f_ n(z):=(z+1)(1+zT/n)^ n+d\), \(n\in {\mathbb{N}}\), d,T\(\geq 0\), have all their zeros with negative real parts. The motivation of the problem is the stability of steady state solutions of a single population model used by \textit{J. M. Cushing} [see ``Volterra integrodifferential equations in population dynamics.'' M. Ianelli (ed.), Mathematics of biology, 81-148 (1981)]. Section 2 of the paper is devoted to some known results concerning the zeros of f(z). The main resuls are presented in Section 3, where the distribution of zeros of f(z), \(f_ n(z)\) and of some other more general versions of them is investigated under the effect of the parameters involved. In the last section a detailed discussion is made where the results obtained and the method used are compared with some others already published elsewhere.
