The paper treats PDE's of the form \[ (1)\quad u_ t=\sum^{N}_{n=0}\mu_ n(\partial^ n/\partial x^ n)u+P(u,u_ x,u_{xx},...), \] where P is an arbitrary analytical function. A rigorous mathematical proof is given for the following assertion which is usually assumed obvious in physical papers: If at least one \(\mu_ n\) with n even is different form zero, Equation (1) has the only polynomial integral of motion \(\int^{+\infty}_{-\infty}u(x)dx\), provided P is a full differential, i.e., \[ (2)\quad P=(\partial /\partial x)F(u,u_ x,u_{xx},...), \] and Equation (1) has no polynomial integral of motion if P cannot be represented in the form (2). The theorem is applied to the Burgers equation, Sivashinsky-Kuramoto equation, and some other ones that play an important role in physical applications.
