The class of totally ordered spaces which is studied in the paper coincides with the well-known class of generalized ordered spaces (GO- spaces). The authors define singularities in totally ordered spaces as non-convergent, monotone, free and convex filters. They classify singularities in the manner which reflects properties which are usually expressed in terms of gaps and pseudo-gaps. Using singularities, the authors construct all ordered compactifications of a totally ordered space X. In particular, they study the largest ordered compactification of X and reprove some results of \textit{V. V. Fedorchuk} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 10, 172-187 (1969; Zbl 0185.504)] and \textit{S. Purisch} [Stud. Topol., Proc. Conf. Charlotte, NC, 1974, 467-478 (1975; Zbl 0306.54043)].
