This article is concerned with the existence of solutions to the nonlinear variational inequality \[ (Tx,\theta (y,x)) \geq 0. \tag{1} \] Here \(T\) is a continuous map from \(K\), a nonempty compact convex subset of a reflexive real Banach space to the dual \(K^*\) of \(X\), \(\theta: K \times K \rightarrow X\) is a continuous map with the properties (a) \((Tx,\theta (x,x)) = 0\); and (b) the map \((Tx,\theta (\cdot , x)\)) is convex. The first result is a proof that (1) possesses a solution \(x_0 \in K\) for all \(y \in K\). Subsequent results are concerned with generalisations of this first theorem. For example, in the next theorem, \(K\) is assumed to be a locally compact convex subset of \(X\), and in addition to the properties described earlier, it is assumed that there exists \(u\) in the open ball of radius \(r\), for some \(r\), such that \((Ty,\theta (u,y)) \geq 0 \) for all \(y\) lying on the sphere of radius \(r\). Under these conditions, the previous existence result holds. The authors also prove a result which is a generalisation of a result due to Minty. That is, if \[ (Tx,\theta (y,x)) + (Ty,\theta (x,y)) \leq 0 \] then (1) is equivalent to \[ (Ty,\theta (x,y)) \geq 0\;\;\text{for all} y \in K. \] The Minty condition leads to the existence of a solution for the case in which \(K\) is convex, closed and bounded. The remainder of the paper is taken up with further generalisations of the theorems discussed above.
