Let \(H\) be a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, and let \(B(H)\) denote the space of all bounded linear operators on \(H\). For \(1<p<\infty\), let \(C_p\) denote the Schatten \(p\)-class in \(B(H)\), with Schatten \(p\)-norm \(|\cdot |_p\). Given an operator \(A\in B(H)\), the inner derivation \(\delta_A\) induced by \(A\) is the operator in \(B(H)\) defined by \(\delta_A(X):= AX-XA\) for all \(X\in B(H)\); see [\textit{C. Apostol}, \textit{L. A. Fialkov}, \textit{D. A. Herrero} and \textit{D. Voiculescu}, Approximation of Hilbert space operators. Vol. II, Research Notes in Mathematics 102 (1984; Zbl 0572.47001)] for further references. For a given \(S\in C_p\), write \(\widetilde S:= S^{p-1}U^*\), where \(S=U|S|\) is the polar decomposition of \(S\). The following orthogonality characterization is proved: Let \(A\in B(H)\) and \(S\in C_p\) for some \(p\) with \(1<p<\infty\). Then \(S\) is orthogonal to the range of \(\delta_A\) restricted to \(C_p\) (in the sense that \(|\delta_A(X)+ S|_p\geq|S|_p\) for all \(X\in C_p\)) if and only if \(A\widetilde S=\widetilde SA\).
