The author presents a simplified analysis of deformation by rolling. The solution for roll pressure is simplified, and the prediction of roll torque is improved by reformulating the problem to eliminate the yield stress derivative term. A homogeneous deformation solution and an inhomogeneous Orowan solution are discussed, and calculated results are compared with each other for rolling data in the existing literature. Selected data covering a range of rolling conditions are reanalyzed and compared with the results computed from the rolling theories presented, with an emphasis on the estimation of the roll torque.
