This paper deals with a new computational approach to Hopf bifurcations in parameter dependent ordinary differential equations \[ \dot y= f(y,\lambda), \] where \(\lambda\) is a real parameter. Unlike the convential methods which approach the Hopf bifurcation point starting from a family of stationary solutions satisfying \[ f(y,\lambda)= 0, \] the proposed method is able to detect the Hopf bifurcation from a `dynamic' solution. Here, instead of calculating eigenvalues of the adjoint Jacobian matrix, the algorithm is based on a shooting method. Several numerical examples are given, and a comparison of this method with other approaches is presented and discussed.
