The dynamics of dissipative systems defined in unbounded space domains is discussed. In particular results on the existence of the semi-flow of evolution, on the development structures due to instabilities, and on large time behaviours are in the focus of the discussion. The paper gives some survey on phenomena and methods in spacial extended systems. For a system in a bounded domain the global attracting set is compact with finite Hausdorff dimension, but the dimension grows with the spacial extension. Is it true for unbounded domains that the dimension per unit volume remains bounded? What is the natural phase space for unbounded domains (Sobolev spaces do not admit waves)? Do semi-flows of evolution exist globally? These are some of the discussed topics. The results are illustrated on simplified models as Swift-Hohenberg and Ginzburg-Landau equations.
