A Codazzi tensor on a Riemannian manifold \(M\) is a symmetric tensor field \(\phi\) for which \(\nabla\phi\) is totally symmetric. Suppose \(\phi\) is a Codazzi tensor of type \((0,2)\) satisfying \(| \nabla\phi| ^2\geq| \nabla(\text{tr} \phi)| ^2\). The author proves the following results: (1) if \(M\) has positive sectional curvature, then \(\phi\) has constant eigenvalues; (2) if \(M\) has nonnegative sectional curvature, then \(| \nabla\phi| ^2=| \nabla(\text{tr} \phi)| ^2\) and the sectional curvature of \(M\) vanishes with respect to 2-planes spanned by 2 eigenvectors corresponding to 2 distinct eigenvalues of \(\phi\). The author then applies these results to obtain several rigidity results for hypersurfaces in real space forms and for spacelike hypersurfaces in Lorentzian space forms. The results improve several known ridigity theorems on hypersurfaces.
