Let \(\Delta\) be the uniform three direction mesh of the plane whose vertices are integer points of \(\mathbb{Z}^2\). Let \(\Delta_{\text{C}}\) be the Clough-Tocher subtriangulation obtained by subdividing each triangle in \(\Delta\) by connecting its center of gravity to its vertices, and let \(\Delta_{\text{P}}\) be the Powell-Sabin subtriangulation obtained by subdividing each triangle by connecting its vertices by the midpoint of the opposite side. On these two subtriangulations the author constructs a compactly supported polynomial spline of each type in \(C^r(\mathbb{R}^2)\) of degree \(d=3r\) (\(d=3r+1\)) for \(r\) odd (even) on the triangulation \(\Delta_{\text{C}}\), and of degree \(d=2r\) (\(d=2r+1)\) for \(r\) odd (even) on the triangulation \(\Delta_{\text{P}}\). Using linear combinations of translates of these splines he obtains Lagrange interpolants whose corresponding order of approximation is optimal. In the construction the author uses the Hermite finite elements with minimal degrees on these subtriangulations which have been constructed by himself and \textit{P. Sablonniere} [Adv. Comput. Math. 2, No. 1, 101-122 (1994; Zbl 0832.65003) and ibid. 6, No. 2, 191-206 (1996; Zbl 0867.65002)]. The paper contains numerical test results.
