The authors survey a Jordan theoretic aspect of Banach spaces with its nonlinear background in bounded symmetric domains and manifolds. This aspect concerns the existence of a partial Jordan structure in any complex Banach space and has applications to the geometry of Banach spaces. The partial Jordan structure is defined via a closed complex subspace \(Z_s\) of a Banach space \(Z\), called the symmetric part of \(Z\). \(Z_s\) is constructed using the group of biholomorphic automorphisms of the open unit ball, and \(Z_s=Z\) iff the automorphism group acts transitively on the ball. In this case, the ball is bounded asymmetric domain and the Banach space \(Z\) is called a \(JB^*\)-triple, where the term triple refers to the Jordan triple product on \(Z\), induced by the Lie algebra of the automorphism group. In Section 1 the authors discuss the holomorphic structure of a bounded domain in a complex Banach space. This sets the scene for the study of bounded symmetric domains and Jordan structures in complex Banach spaces. In Section 2 they give a general introduction to \(JB^*\)-triples which were developed by Kaup for the algebraic classification of symmetric Banach manifolds. In Section 3 isometries of Banach spaces and Banach algebras to partial Jordan structures are discussed. In Section 4 the authors present recent results on partial Jordan triple structure and von Neumann inequality in Banach algebras, answering questions posed by Arazy.
