In the first part of this paper, the author discusses the Dirichlet problem \[ y''+f(t,y)=0,\quad y(0)=y(1)=0, \tag{1} \] in case \(f\) is singular both in the \(y\)-variable (at \(y=0\)) and in the \(t\)-variable (at \(t=0\) and \(t=1\)). Several existence theorems for solutions \(y\in C[0,1]\cap C^2(0,1)\) to (1) are obtained from somewhat elaborate conditions on the nonlinearity \(f\). Some of the assumptions concern the existence of lower or upper solutions. The second part of the paper deals with the problem \[ y''+f(t,y)=0,\quad y(0)=0,\quad \theta(y'(1))+y(1)=0, \] where the boundary condition at \(t=1\) is nonlinear. The existence of solutions \(y\in C[0,1]\cap C^1(0,1]\cap C^2(0,1)\) is obtained using the same ideas than for the Dirichlet problem (1). The method of proof rely on fixed point theorems which are variants of Schauder's theorem. Some examples are presented.
