The paper presents a survey of mathematical models in ecology and its evolution, emphasising the major feedback mechanisms regulating the population densities of the interacting self-replicating units. More precisely, the author presents basic statements from population ecology, emphasising the permanence of an ecological system and the long-term evolution. Also he deals with population dynamics of infectious diseases and makes a discussion on the so-called Red Queen theory of sex. The last section of the paper is devoted to the evolution of cooperation by examining a model from game theory.
