    The author's aim is to study the function \(f(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty z^{2^n}\) near its circle of convergence by elementary methods. At first he gives a very simple proof of the non-continuability of \(f(z)\). Next he proves the estimate \[ \left| f(z)-\sum_{n=0}^{N-1} \exp(2^n\theta i)\right|\leq 3, \] uniformly in \(0<t\leq 1\) and \(\theta\), where \(z=e^{i\theta}e^{-t}\) and \(N=\left[\frac 1{\log 2}\log \frac 1t\right]\). Denoting the set of possible limit points of \(\frac{\log 2}{\log 1/t} \, f\left(e^{-t}e^{2\pi i\psi}\right)\) resp. \(\frac 1N \sum_0^{N-1} \exp(2\pi i\psi 2^n)\) for \(t\to 0+\) by \(S[\psi]\) resp. \(T[\psi]\), the author shows (with the abbreviation \(r=\varphi(q)\)) that \[ S[\psi]=T[\psi]=\left\{ \frac{1}{r} \sum_{n=0}^{r-1} \exp\bigl (2\pi i2^n \tfrac {p}{q}\bigr) \right\} \] is a one-point set, if \(\psi=p/q\), \(p,q\) coprime, \(q\) odd (without loss of generality).
