The paper studies irreducible representations of Galois groups of tamely ramified extensions of \(p\)-adic fields. A basic finite extension \(K\) of \(\mathbb Q_p\) with a residue field of \(q\) elements is considered. Let \(\pi\) be a prime element of \(K\) and let \(n\) be an integer not divisible by \(p\). A finite tamely ramified extension \(N\) of \(K\) is said to be of \(n\)-symplectic type if its Galois group \(G= \mathcal G(N/K)\) has the following properties: (a) It is nonabelian. (b) Its center \(Z\) is cyclic. (c) The quotient group \(G/Z\) is isomorphic to \((\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)^2\). Then \(G\) is shown to admit a faithful irreducible representation of dimension \(n\). Moreover, \(N = K(\zeta_s,(\pi\zeta_s^{jn})^{i/e}))\), where \(e\) is the ramification index of \(N/K\), \(\zeta_s\) is an \(s\)-th root of unity with \(s = q^f - 1\) and \(f\) is the residue degree of \(N/K\), and the following conditions are satisfied: (1) \(n\mid q - 1\); (2) \(n\mid f\); (3) \(n\mid e\); (4) \((e/n)\mid q -1\); (5) \(\gcd\left(n, \frac{q-1}{e/n}\right) = 1\), (6) \(\gcd(j,e/n,f/n)=1\). Conversely, let \(N\) be a finite normal tamely ramified extension of \(K\). Assume that every prime divisor of \(e=e(N/K)\) divides \(q -1\) and that \(\mathcal G(N/K)\) admits a faithful irreducible representation of dimension \(n\) such that \(n\mid q-1\) (and \(4\mid q-1\) if \(n\) is even). Then \(N/K\) is shown to be an \(n\)-symplectic type extension; in particular \(N/K\) is a nilpotent extension.
