Using the terminology of \textit{A. Wilansky's} book ``Summability through functional analysis'' (1984; Zbl 0531.40008) the paper's main Theorem 1 is: Let \(E\) be a \(BK-AD\)-space such that \(E_ 0'\) (the norm closed linear hull of the projection functionals \(x\mapsto x_ n\), \(n\in N\), in the topological dual \(E'\)) is complemented in \(E'\). Let \(F\) be any \(FK\)- space satisfying \(\Phi\subset F\subset E\). Let \(X=E^ \gamma\), \(Y=F^ \gamma\), and suppose \(X\to Y\) has the gliding humps property (defined in Section 1). Then \(F<E\), i.e., for any \(FK\)-space \(G\supset\Phi\) with \(E=F+G\) one has \(E=G\). Corollary 1. Let \(E\) be a \(BK-AK\)-space such that \(E_ 0'=\bar\Phi\) is separately complemented in \(E'\), and let \(F\) be an \(FK\)-space with \(\Phi\subset F\subset E\). Then \(F<E\) iff \(E^ \gamma \to F^ \gamma\) has the Meyer-König Zeller property MKZ. (For \(FK\)-spaces \(X\), \(Y\) with \(\Phi\subset X\subset Y\), the inclusion \(X\to Y\) is said to have MKZ if for any \(FK\)-space \(F\), the relation \(Y\cap F\subset X\) implies that \(X\cap F\) is closed in \(F\).) Corollary 1 generalizes a theorem of A. K. Snyder. In Lemma 3, MKZ is related to the gliding humps property. Often they are equivalent. For \(BK\)-spaces \(E,F\supset\Phi\), the inclusion operator \(E^ \gamma\to F^ \gamma\) satisfies MKZ if \(E^ \gamma \to F^ \gamma\) is strictly singular for the norm topologies (equivalently, for the weak star topologies). This parallel to a result of Snyder on \(E'\to F'\) is contained among further characterizations of MKZ in Proposition 3 of the last section, which also interrelates the gliding humps property to strict singularity and ends with an equivalence between strict cosingularity of \(F\to E\) and strict singularity of \(E^ \gamma\to F^ \gamma\) for certain \(BK\)-spaces \(E\), \(F\).
