Let \(M\) be an affine algebraic variety of dimension \(n\). A semi-algebraic open subset \(A\) of \(M\) is called basic if \(A\) is represented as the finite intersection of open subsets of type \(\{x\in M\mid f(x)>0\}\) for \(f\in\mathbb{R}[M]\). Let \(s(A)\) denote the minimal number of polynomials representing \(A\). Set \(s(n)=\sup_{n,A}\{s(A)\mid A\) is a basic open subset of \(M\), \(\dim(M)=n\)\}. Then, for a semi-algebraic basic open subset \(A\), the authors give an explicit method to modify the polynomials involved in a generic presentation of \(A\) in order to obtain a representation of \(A\). --- As an application, they reprove the result \(s(n)=n\) of Bröcker and Scheiderer, in the case \(n\leq3\).
