Using results from combinatorics, the author proves the following theorem about the number of generators of monomial radical ideals: Let \(I\) be a monomial radical ideal over the polynomial ring \(k[X_ 1,\ldots,X_ n]\), where \(k\) is any field. Let \(m=\min\{|\deg(m_ i)-n/2|\}\) where \(m_ i\) run over a minimal set of monomial generators for \(I\). Then \(\mu(I)\leq{n \choose [n/2]+m}\). Furthermore, if one of the \(m_ i\)'s has degree bigger than \((n/2)+m\) or smaller than \((n/2)-m\), then the above inequality is strict.
