    [Part I has been published as a preprint in 1989.] The paper is devoted to the blow-up problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, \[ 2iu_ t+\Delta u+F(u)=0,\quad F(u)=| u|^{p-1}u+\chi| u|^{q-1}u \tag{*} \] with \(\chi\in\mathbb{R}\), \(1\leq q<p\), \(p=\sigma-1=1+4/N\). The central result of the paper refers to the ``mass concentration'' phenomenon and is formulated as follows: Suppose that the solution \(u(t)\) to eq. \((*)\) with the initial condition \(u(0,x)=u_ 0(x)\in H^ 1\) blows up at \(t=T\), i.e.: \(\lim_{t\to T}\|\nabla u\|=\lim_{t\to T}\| u(t)\|_ \sigma=+\infty\). Let \((t_ n)_ n\) be any sequence such that \(t_ n\to T\) as \(n\to\infty\). Set \(\lambda_ n\equiv\lambda(t_ n)=1/\| u(t_ n)\|_ \sigma^{\sigma/2}\),\quad \(S_ \lambda u(t,x)=\lambda^{N/2}u(t,\lambda x)\). Then there exists a subsequence of \((t_ n)_ n\) which satisfies the following properties: one can find a sequence \((y_ n)_ n\) in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\) such that, for any \(\varepsilon>0\), there is a constant \(K>0\): \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}\inf\int_{B(K)}| S_{\lambda_ n}u(t_ n,x+y_ n)|^ 2dx\geq(1-\varepsilon)\| Q\|^ 2, \] where \(Q\) is a ground state (minimum \(L^ 2\) norm, stationary) solution of \((*)\) and \(B(K)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^ N,| x|\leq K\}\).
