In this remarkable paper the author deals with the existence of a positive radial solution of the problem \(-\Delta u=r^ \sigma| u|^{p-1}u+\lambda r^ \alpha u\) in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\), where \(r=| x|\), \(N\geq3\), \(\sigma\geq-2\) and where \(p\) is equal to exactly the critical value, that means \(p=(N+2+2\sigma)/(N-2)\). So the result extends the previous one due to \textit{H. Brézis} and \textit{L. Nirenberg} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 36, 437-477 (1983; Zbl 0541.35029)] when \(\sigma=\alpha=0\). The proof uses a variational method in weighted Sobolev spaces together with the techniques of Brézis and Nirenberg. The existence result is obtained for intervals of \(\lambda\) in dependence of the other parameters of the equation.
