Let \(G_ n=GL_ n(\mathbb{F}_ q)\) be the general linear group, that is the group of nonsingular matrices of degree \(n\) with coefficients in the finite field \(\mathbb{F}_ q\). Let \(P_ n\) be the maximal parabolic subgroup of \(G_ n\) consisting of matrices \((g_{ij})\in G_ n\) such that \(g_{21}=g_{31}=\dots=g_{n1}=0\). Let \(L_ n\) be a Levi subgroup of \(P_ n\). Hence \(L_ n\) is isomorphic to \(G_ 1\times G_{n-1}\). In this paper the irreducible characters of \(P_ n\) are calculated by an inductive method, and the branching rules of irreducible characters for \(G_ n\to P_ n\) and \(P_ n\to L_ n\) are determined. The basis for calculations of this kind is a parametrization of the irreducible characters of \(G_ n\) which was given by \textit{J. A. Green} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 80, 402-447 (1955; Zbl 0068.25605)]. The results are derived by generalized inductions and restrictions applied to the special situation.
