The subject of the paper was inspired by an idea of \textit{A. Ros} [Kodai Math. J. 6, 88-99 (1983; Zbl 0518.53057)], who has meant an interesting progress in the study of several families of submanifolds of \(\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^ n\). Though a systematic study of a certain family of real hypersurfaces of the complex hyperbolic space \(\mathbb{C} H^ n\) was realized by \textit{S. Montiel} and the second author [Geom. Dedicata 20, 245-261 (1986; Zbl 0587.53052)] and though it is known that there does not exist an isometric immersion of \(\mathbb{C} H^ n\) in a Euclidean space with parallel second fundamental form, the authors were trying to construct a good isometric embedding of \(\mathbb{C} H^ n\) in a pseudo-Euclidean space. The present paper represents a quite comprehensive study of such an embedding and its application to the analysis of real hypersurfaces of \(\mathbb{C} H^ n\) including, in the last paragraph, a characterization of the horosphere of \(\mathbb{C} H^ n\) by means of a certain differential equation.
